Baling TMR, short for total mixed ration, is a great way to ensure safe storage and optimal conservation of the forage, as well as easy market access.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">SUGAR BEET PULP</h2>



When ensiled in a bale, the pulp cools down much faster than in bunker silos or bags. The bales can be fed after as little as two weeks of storage, compared to a bunker or bag silo where you have to wait a minimum of six weeks.



Moreover, baling sugar beet pulp is convenient for the farmer: After opening and feeding a bale, the remaining bales stay closed, retaining 100% of their quality.

As the compactor chamber is finished applying high-density pressure to bale your material, a wide film is applied to the bale, keeping it intact as the bale exits the chamber.



Once it has been transported to the wrapping table, the bale, which is secured with wide film, is sealed shut using layers of wrapping film for optimal feed storage. Swedish studies conducted on the area of net+film vs. film+film indicate that the film-on-film solution is slightly more expensive, as each bale will cost an average of 4 Swedish kronor, or 0,39 euros more per bale. Depending on the number of layers, be it four, five, six, seven, or eight layers, the increased cost for each bale using film-on-film rather than net-on-film are 4,8SEK(0,47EUR), 4,4SEK(0,43EUR), 4,0SEK(0,39EUR), 3,6SEK(0,35EUR), and 3,2SEK(0,31EUR) respectively.



However, since film-on-film improves silage preservation, you may find that film wrapping requires fewer layers than net wrapping. Allowing oneself to reduce wrapping by two layers, film-on-film may prove cost efficient (and time efficient) for your production!

<h2>New Orkel Film Uses Recycled Content for Improved Environmental Credentials</h2>
Orkel has added a new film made with 25% post-consumer  recycled plastic (PCR) to its range of agricultural films. Orkel PRO 1800 Sustane incorporates PCR into a high-performance product to deliver a quality silage film with an improved environmental profile.
The use of recycled content in Orkel PRO 1800 Sustane film adds to the existing benefits of pre-orientated ProTechnology. The film also provides a longer reel length than standard 25 μm, 1500m film, so customers can wrap more bales per reel, saving time and preserving silage quality.
By using recycled content, Orkel is supporting the circular economy and helping to divert waste from landfill or incineration. Life cycle analysis data confirms that using Orkel PRO 1800 Sustane 23 μm film (with 25% PCR) reduces the environmental load by 24% compared to standard 25 μm film (with 0% PCR)*.
Additionally, Orkel PRO 1800 Sustane film has been certified by RecyClass, giving users full traceability to the origin of the recycled content. The product is also conveniently packaged in a polyethylene (PE) sleeve, allowing the balewrap and outer packaging to be recycled together and eliminating the need for separation.

WHY WOULD I CONSIDER INVESTING IN A COMPACTOR WHEN I ALREADY OWN A SILO FOR STORING MY FORAGE?



This is the case for many of our customers who have worked within the forage market for a while, and are presented with Orkel's technology.



Today, many farmers use bunker silos as their primary fodder storage and are content with this solution.



But why do many of Orkel's customers use an Orkel compactor in addition to their silo, and why do some of them end up discarding their silo completely? Round bales or silo?

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Significant differences in losses</h2>



A study conducted by the&nbsp;Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences&nbsp;(SLU) confirms there are significant differences in forage quality based on how the forage&nbsp;is stored.



The study was conducted across 12 different farms from 12 bunker silos, 6 bag silos, 3 tower silos and 2x60 round bales. Samples were collected three days a week, a total of 650 samples during harvesting and another 300 samples during feeding.

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Invisible losses</h5>



The most noteworthy discovery were the invisible losses due to fermentation.



The average losses were 14,1% for the bunker silos, 11,5% for bag silos and 23,4% for tower silos. The round bales, however, had an average loss of&nbsp;1%.&nbsp;



The low loss average in round bales are most likely due to low oxygen supply resulting from a denser packed forage together with a shorter time span from opening to feedout.

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">WHAT IS ULTIMATELY THE OUTTAKE FROM THIS STUDY?</h5>



To put it simply; This means that the forage in bunker, bag and tower silos lose substancial amounts of energy and protein during storage, while forage in round bales do not.



The general rule of thumb is the less energy and protein in the forage, the more forage your animals will need in order to maintain a high production. Based on the result of this study,&nbsp;your animals will get more energy from less forage if your forage is stored in bales!



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Does this mean that all silos are bad?</h2>



No!



Silos offer a good storage solution for farmers, which is the reason for why it always has been such a popular storage solution worldwide.



<h6 class="wp-block-heading">HOWEVER, SILOS ARE DEMANDING</h6>



Silos have the potential to be good storage solutions if the user is familiar with optimal silo management, which unfortunately is too great a demand for your average farmer.&nbsp;Common errors such as overfilling silos, low packing density, inadequate sealing techniques, and poor inspection are often the source to why the bulk material deteriorates.



Additionally, a silo under optimal conditions would not retain the forage nutrients as consistently as a high-density bale under optimal conditions, which is illustrated in the calculated losses mentioned above.

Orkel Wrap’s ability to cover the bale from edge to edge offers additional protection around the edge of the bale &#8211; especially useful when baling stalky crops.

Due to the high tightening force, Orkel Wrap creates tighter, more compact bales that benefit from a more rounded shape. These compact bales take less space during transport and storage and are more stable during storage.
<h2>Smooth film surface</h2>
Orkel Wrap is easier to remove as no fodder can become enmeshed as when using netwrap. This is particularly useful during winter months as fodder will not become trapped in frosty conditions. Thanks to its smooth film surface bales can be unwrapped quickly and easily.

Together with the acknowledged packaging company ASPLA, we are offering a wrapping film made of 35% recycled plastic. A product that better utilizes the world's resources while not limiting the product's capabilities! 



ASPLA is currently the only manufacturer having the ISCC international certificate for silage wrap, being their recycled wrap. They are certified by ISCC&nbsp;®, a multi-stakeholder initiative working towards a more sustainable world, such as securing protection of soil, water and air, while measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

After <a href="https://www.orkel.com/blog/testing-orkel-recycled-film">completing extensive testing</a>, we are proud to share that the film offers a matched film quality as our previous wrapping films. Mr. Håkon Røed, Engineer of The Livestock Production Research Centre in Norway, partook in baling and nutrition tests of the film, and confidently expresses that he is optimistic to the recycled wrap. In addition to the assured quality, the wrap introduces added selection: “There are apparent benefits in providing different types of high-quality film, depending on the values of the customer (or researcher, in our case!)” We couldn’t agree more regarding it being a significant addition to the baling industry, especially due to the looming tax additions from the EU, which this product avoids.
