The Seaweed Project

Seaweed is a plant growing under the water. There are many different types which most of them contains a lot of important vitamins and protein. As of today, the world is only using 1% of the resources available in the ocean. With the number of people in the world constantly increasing, it is more important than ever to utilize every available resource. Cultivation of seaweed is thus emerging on a worldwide basis.

Seaweed is being used for several purposes. The main use of seaweed today is food, medicines and skin care, but we are not using very much of it. One of the areas we are looking into, is animal forage.

There are 1.4 billion cattle in the world, used for dairy and meat. The resources we are using today such as corn/maize, wheat, soya and grass soon won't be enough. What if we could make animal forage out of seaweed? That is what we are trying to find out together with SINTEF and Seaweed Energy Solutions.

Our Compactors is known for making round bales out of most materials. Can they bale seaweed as well? 19th of May, we did the first test with baling cultivated seaweed with the Orkel MP2000 Compactor. It was a very exciting experience both for us and Seaweed Energy Solutions, who came to our factory with the seaweed. We learned a lot during the test, and believe that this will be a success.  We will keep this article updated with any new information!
